Joanne M. Canaday, 80, of Eau Claire and formerly of Augusta, passed away in hospice care at Syverson Lutheran Home in Eau Claire on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013.
Joanne Mary Canaday, daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Zellmer) Dettlaff was born March 28, 1933 in Milwaukee. Joanne grew up in Milwaukee where she graduated from Pulaski High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Charles Leo Canaday on Jan. 19, 1952 in Milwaukee. After their marriage Charles served 5 more years in the U.S. Navy, at which time they lived in Hawaii and California. After his discharge the family returned to Wisconsin, living in Bruce and Milwaukee before moving to Augusta in 1971. While in Augusta the couple owned and operated the Coast to Coast Store for 5 years. In 2000, both Joan and her husband started working as greeters for Walmart in Eau Claire. Joan's love for interacting with the public then took her to Festival Foods in Eau Claire, working as a demonstrator in the meat department, which she only recently retired from due to failing health.
Since 1990, Joan and Charles had spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona. While in Augusta, Joan was an active member of the First Baptist Church and worked with AWANA. While in Arizona they attended Desert View Baptist Church and enjoyed their involvement with Friends Forever. Joan loved to travel, seeing the sights and meeting people along the way by starting up friendly conversations. She also like to scrap book, knit and crochet.
Joanne will be dearly missed by her 4 children, Suzan (Jim) Mayo of Durand, Robin (Dale) Wood of Eau Claire, Mike (Jolene) Canaday of Augusta, Curt Canaday of Apache Junction, AZ; 10 grandchildren, Mauri (Trent) Moss, Luke (Lisa) Canaday, Josh (Mary) Mayo, Nick (Sarah) Canaday, Amanda (Michael) Schroeder, Jason (Sarah) Wood, Kyle (Kaytlin) Wood, Alison Wood, Aidan Canaday-Allen, Colton Canaday-Allen; 12 great grandchildren and sister-in-law Bernice Dettlaff of Milwaukee.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles on Aug. 26, 2010 and daughter, Lynn Marie Canaday on March 20, 2009.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Augusta, with burial in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. A visitation will be held on Sunday before services starting at 1:00 p.m. The family is assisted by the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta.
