Mabel Habermeyer
Mabel H. Habermeyer, 91, of Fairchild, passed away in hospice care at the Augusta Area Nursing Home, early Monday morning, December 30, 2013.

Mabel Helen Habermeyer, daughter of Herman and Helen (Tindula) Niemuth was born June 15, 1922 in Stetsonville, Wisconsin. As a child she attended the Little Black Country School. Mabel was united in marriage to Emery Habermeyer on Aug. 11, 1945 in Lincoln, Nebraska, while Emery was in the U.S. Army and stationed in Nebraska. The couple moved to San Diego, California, and after his discharge in 1946 they returned to Stetsonville. In 1958 they moved to Fairchild where they owned and operated Habermeyer Tie and Lumber Company until 1979. For several growing seasons they enjoyed operating a grading station, grading cucumbers for Bonduel Pickle Company and for 10 years they had also raised ginseng. In addition to doing the bookwork for the family businesses, Mabel also operated the Fairchild Credit Union out of her home for over 40 years. For over 10 years she had also worked as the clerk at Jay McGregor’s Auction Barn in Fairchild. Mabel had served 2 terms on the Osseo-Fairchild School Board and had worked on the election board for the Village of Fairchild. Mabel enjoyed crocheting and over the years made many afghans for family members and also helmet liners for our troupes. She enjoyed visiting, playing a friendly game of cards and canning. At the age of 89 she was still canning and was proud of the fact that she canned 100 jars of tomatoes. Due to ill health, Mabel had been a resident of the Augusta Area Nursing Home for the past month.

Mabel will be deeply missed by her daughter, Nancy and George Remkus of Fairchild; 2 grandchildren, Sarah and John Rugotzke of Sugar Camp, Matthew Remkus (Camille Guenther) of Lakeville, MN. She is further survived by her brother, Marvin Niemuth of Stetsonville; 4 sisters, Marcella Vlach of Tampa Bay, FL, Elaine Fritsche of Dorchester, Ruth Arndt of Medford, Vivian (Henry) Hentges of St. Charles, MN; in-laws, Ellen Niemuth, Henry Weiler, Arthur Ludwig, Janet Niemuth; Habermeyer –in-laws, Patricia and Melvin Gebert, Wayne Bischel, Marion and Robert Paul, Dorothy and Ev Sonsalla; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Emery on March 10, 2006 and siblings, Rachel Weiler, Pearl Wieneke, Beatrice Ludwig, Glenn and Vernon Niemuth and a brother in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Sat. January 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairchild, with Pastor Ricky Bertels officiating. Burial will be in the Fairchild Cemetery.
