Arlene Leone (Vogler) Mathwig, age 81, died suddenly at home on Sunday, April 7, 2013.Â
Arlene was born Sept. 29, 1931, the only child of Phillip and Teresa (Stabenow) Vogler. She was confirmed at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated from Fall Creek High School in 1949. She went on to attain a secretarial degree from Eau Claire Vocational School and before her marriage worked 2 years as a legal secretary in Eau Claire. Arlene was united in marriage to Tom Mathwig on June 14, 1952, and to this union their two daughters, Debbie and Emmy were born. Â
Arlene was a wonderfully loving and kind woman with the most generous and thoughtful soul. She knew everyone’s favorite foods and loved to buy treats. She would take a dozen donuts to her “bee sting injectionâ€? appointments, and made pumpkin cookies with frosting for Emmy’s high school plays. You could find her kitchen full of M&M’s and cookies. Arlene always encouraged everyone “Eat! you look hungry,â€? or scolded, “or I’ll stuff it in your shorts.â€? Arlene was always more concerned about everyone’s feelings and well being more than her own. She had a list of people to phone on particular days of the week! Â
She took care of Tom’s mother, Olga, for many years; taking her to appointments, grocery shopping, serving as financial POA, and even learned to drink tea for afternoon chats. Arlene was an extremely hard worker, working along side Tom on the farm for over 40 years, never pausing to take time for herself. She milked cows, lugged milk, baled hay, sold eggs, cleaned barn and did whatever chores needed to be done, in addition to taking care of the house and the farm finances. The greatest joy in her life was raising her 2 daughters.
Arlene had a great love for all animals, and especially her white spitz, Pupsie. She also enjoyed Mr. Pig, her pet pig that acted like a huge, happy dog, complete with rides in the truck. Arlene also enjoyed attending many parades with the white oxen, Chester and Lester, who would recognize her in the crowd of people while in the parade route. She would often buy a trunk full of day old breads and pastries for Chester, Lester and their friend, Otis. Currently, Arlene shared her home with cats, Oscar and Big Shot, and her 3 legged dog, Cassidy. She loved to take Cassidy on trips to Osseo.
Arlene will be deeply missed by Tom, her husband of nearly 61 years; daughter, Debbie (Ray) Sturz of Opelika, AL, daughter, Emmy Mathwig (Joel Fosburgh) of Eau Claire; grandson, Brad (Sara) Sturz of Savannah, GA, grandson, Brian “Buzzâ€? Sturz (Cheryl) of Opelika, AL; nephew, Jeff (Jo) Schwartz of Rochester, NY; and favorite niece, Tina Sturz (Pam) of Eau Claire. Â
She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, with Pastor Frederick Theiste officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fall Creek. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Arlene’s generous spirit, please send donations to any of the local charities. Â
Arlene always ended her phone messages to Emmy with; “Remember your mom loves you.â€? We love you so much, mom, and we will miss your gentle ways. You’re free from all your pain and worries now. Thank you for all you’ve done for so many.Â
