Faith Matter, 77, of Fairchild, passed away Thursday evening, April 18, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health Care System-Eau Claire.Â
Faith, daughter of Frank and Mary (Greencrow) Thunder, was born Feb. 15, 1936, at the Frog in rural Jackson County. As a small child she moved with her family to rural Fairchild, where she attended grade and high school. She was united in marriage to James Matter on July 23, 1960 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church- Fairview, rural Fairchild. The couple lived in Menomonie and St. Paul before moving to Fairchild in 1967. In 1970 the family moved to Augusta, where they lived for 30 years, moving back to Fairchild in 2000. Early in her marriage she worked at a nursing home in Menomonie, and then volunteered as a working parent in the Augusta school system, helping in the kitchen and assisting with children. She enjoyed explaining her Indian Culture during assemblies at the Augusta schools and at UW-Eau Claire. She enjoyed all types of dancing, especially Pow Wows. She loved country music, listening to Elvis, working in her flower gardens and never missed an occasion to send flowers. She was proud of her involvement with Black River Falls American Auxiliary Post # 129 and her commitment to the Ho-Chunk Nation Clan Mothers.
Faith will be deeply missed by Jim, her husband of nearly 53 years; 5 children, Peter Matter (Jenny Richter), Patricia Matter all of Eau Claire, Pamela (Ronald) Wilber of Green Bay, Perry “Pagoâ€? Matter of Fairchild, Penny (Marty) Ybarra of Tomah; 6 grandchildren, Christian, Katelyn and Madison Wilber, Barbara Kmetz, Anthony Smith, Julia Wakefield; 3 brothers, Gordon (Beverly) Thunder and Levi Thunder all of Fairchild, Josiah Thunder of Tomah; 4 sisters, Myrtle Long of Osseo, Hope Smith of Vesper, Charity Thunder, Fay and Irwin Begay all of Black River Falls. Â
She was preceded in death by her father, Frank on Feb. 6, 1969, mother, Mary on Nov. 1, 1996 and infant children, Paul and Hinu. Â
Native American Church Services will be held Sunday, April 21, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the home of James Matter in Fairchild, with burial in the Fairchild Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta. A Native American Prayer Services will he held Saturday evening at the Matter home. Â
