Harlow A. Matz, 89, of rural Osseo, was called home Sunday evening, Nov. 16, 2014 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Harlow Arthur Matz was born on March 25, 1925, on the family farm to Arthur and Elva (Pehlke) Matz. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Foster, where he was a lifelong member. He attended York Valley Country School. Harlow met the love of his life, Irene, at Fournier’s Ballroom in Eau Claire. They were married on April 18, 1949, at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek. Together Harlow and Irene shared 65 years of marriage and were blessed with 6 children.
Harlow was a lifelong farmer, having bought and farmed the home farm. Even after retiring and moving off the farm, he continued to raise sheep, livestock and chickens, gardened, worked in the field and cut wood. His other passions were spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren and reading his countless western books.
Harlow is survived by his wife, Irene; children, Kathy(Michael) Fox of Janesville, Geoffrey Matz of Baldwin, Connie (Michael) Rauter of Osseo, Pamela (Chris) Cline of Fall Creek, Ricky Matz of Osseo; grandchildren, Kristina (David) Pittenger, Kyle Fox, Kelly (Brian Steinke) Fox, Jacob (Jacqueline) Matz, Justin and Jonah Matz, Sheena Matz, Anthony (Erika) Berry, Mackenzie, Jeramee and Marisa Berry, Cody, Tanner and Catrina Cline; great grandchildren, Austin, Owen, Huston, Lucas, Archer, Braxtyn and Alexis; brother, Harold Matz of Eau Claire; sister, Margaret Meyer of Menomonie; and in-laws, Erick and Lorraine Kromrey, Margaret Kromrey all of Fall Creek, Tena Kromrey of Janesville, Phyllis Laas of Littleton, CO; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Randy on March 10, 2007; brothers, Alfred and Ellwyn Matz and sister, Edna Ziehlsdorff. In-laws, Arvin Ziehlsdorff, Lois Matz, Harold and Leona Volbrecht, Marlow and Elda Bruesewitz, Earl Meyer, Harold, Albert, George and Elmyra Kromrey.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Foster, with Pastor Dennis Voss officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
