Janice R. Atkinson, 70, of Augusta, “Woman of God” passed away at her home Tuesday afternoon, November 10, 2015, surrounded by her loving family and also in the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
Janice Rose Atkinson, daughter of Arthur and Florence (Rossman) Buckendahl was born July 8, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois. She was raised with her sister in Indiana, where she attended grade school and graduated from Highland High School. Janice had worked at Walgreen’s Drug Store before enlisting in the United States Navy on July 18, 1963. She received her training at the Hospital Corpsman School in Great Lake, Illinois, and went on to serve at Great Lakes. Janice was united in marriage to Allen Ray “Gunslinger” Atkinson on Nov. 16, 1963 in Hammond. The couple had lived in Highland, Indiana, before moving to Augusta. They eventually moved to Stanley, before moving back to Augusta in 1991. In addition to raising her 4 children, Janice had also worked as a waitress and cook in Stanley, and with the Sears Company where she sold maintenance plans. She was working with Sears when she was injured in an automobile accident that forced her retirement. Janice enjoyed making crafts, some which she sold at flea markets. She also loved all types of jewelry. Through the years she had raised many large vegetable gardens and enjoyed canning her abundant harvests.
In recent years her involvement with the Assembly of God Church was an important part of her life. She especially enjoyed being a part of it’s bible study known as the “Apple Dumpling Gang” and the friendships she made through it. Janice was diagnosis with cancer 5 months ago.
Janice will be dearly missed by her 2 sons, John Atkinson of Augusta, Raymond (Joyce) Atkinson of Loyal; 2 daughters, Regina Lee (Ric Woodford) of Augusta, Peggy Van Gorder (Dan Otto) of Osseo; 5 grandchildren, Allen “A.J.” (Amity) Kuehl, Ryan Atkinson, Rose Atkinson (Tyler Engelman), Robin Atkinson, Katelynn Atkinson; 2 great grandchildren, Seth and Aeria Kuehl; son-in-law, Tim Van Gorder of Augusta; her sister Judith’s children, Judith “Jaye” (Michael) Cole, Joanna Kuhn (Dave Oliver), Arthur (Erica) Marion, Michael (Connie) Marion, Henry (Maddy) Marion and their families. Janice was preceded in death by her parents; husband Allen on Dec. 30, 2001: stillborn son Jeffery Allen; and sister Judith Marion on Oct. 18, 2008.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Augusta, with military honors by the Augusta area veterans. A visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Burial will be at a later date in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.
