Margaret “Marge” Elizabeth Eklund, 74, of rural Augusta, passed away suddenly Friday evening, July 3, 2015 at her home.
Marge was born February 28, 1941 in Lumberton County, North Carolina. She was raised and attended school in North Carolina near Fort Bragg. After her education she was employed at a clothing manufacturer in Charleston, South Carolina. While in Charleston she met Josef Elmer Eklund and the two later married on February 4, 1961 in North Charleston. For the next 16 years, Marge was a military wife and raised her 3 children.
Following Joe while he was in the U.S. Navy she had made her home in Charleston, Norfolk, Virginia, and Long Beach, California. When Joe retired from the service the family moved to Augusta, making their home on the Dells Pond. While living in Augusta, Marge had been employed seasonally on the line at Bush Brothers Canning Company, as a school bus driver for the Augusta School District, as an aid at the Fall Creek Valley Care Center, 3 years as co-sexton for the Augusta Cemetery Association, at Nortec and also for Mail Source. She had enjoyed her involvement with the Augusta Red Hat Society, the Augusta-Bridge Creek Fire Department Auxiliary, Augusta V.F.W. Auxiliary and as a member of the Augusta A.A.R.P. Chapter where she served as chaplain. If you knew Marge, you knew she loved to visit with family and friends. She always looked forward to attending Luck Bucks on Tuesday at the Hot Spot in Augusta and the camaraderie that went with it.
Marge will be deeply missed by her Joe, her husband of 54 years; 3 children, Marlene and William Harmon of Lyle, MN, Pete Eklund and Diamond of Augusta, Nathan “Smiley” Eklund of Augusta; 4 grandchildren, Anson (Amanda) Eklund, Shawn Harmon, Stephanie (Dustin) Gaul and Joshua Eklund; and by 4 great grandchildren, Shanna, Caitlyn, William and Josef.
