Elaine Schroeder, 91, of Augusta, passed away with her family at her side on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire.
Elaine Doris Gonitzke Schroeder, daughter of August and Helen (Welke) Gonitzke was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Otter Creek Township, rural Augusta. She grew up in the Augusta area where she received her education.
Elaine was united in marriage to Lorain Schroeder on May 12, 1940, and to this union nine children were born. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Rodell area of rural Augusta, before moving into the city of Augusta in 1984.
Elaine was active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, serving with the Grace Ladies Society and as it’s president for many years. She also attended bible studies and her participation in the prayer chain was very important and meaningful to her. She was also active in 4-H. Elaine served as project and then general leader for the Rodell Busy Bees club, was on the county leader’s council, and was fair superintendent for the clothing project. She was a member and president of the Bears Grass Homemakers group and served on the county homemaker council.
Elaine loved sewing, making many of her own clothes and then clothing for her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren. She finished a dress for newest great granddaughter in November and was frustrated that the quality of her sewing was not as it used to be. She also quilted, making baby quilts for many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and pieced countless tops together for the Grace quilters for Lutheran and World Relief (including 90 last year). She crocheted many rugs, doilies, ornaments, scarves and caps, including many that were sent to soldiers as a mission project of the church. She became a certified judge for clothing, needlework, etc. She was an excellent cook and home canner and became a Master Food Preserver in 1987. Every church bake sale had some of her dry yeast bread and rolls, made fresh that day from scratch. She loved to read and has hundreds of books on bookshelves in nearly every room of her home. Elaine enjoyed traveling with her family, which she recorded in journals as well as childhood memories and daily life.
