E. Dawn Zempel, 94, of Fall Creek, passed away early Thursday morning, April 2, 2015, at Heritage Assisted Living in Eau Claire. She was comforted by the loving care of her family, the Heritage staff and Mayo Home Hospice.
Elviro Dawn Zempel, daughter of Loy and Pearl (Macomber) Lowman was born October 26, 1920, on the family farm in Ludington Township, rural Augusta. As a child she attended Oak Ridge Country School and graduated from Augusta High School.
Following graduation Dawn had worked in Eau Claire, first as a nanny and then in the dietary department of Mount Washington Sanitarium. She was united in marriage to John D. Zempel on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1942, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek. Dawn and John worked on several farms before purchasing the Zempel farm in Fall Creek. They raised two children, Dennis and Donna, and always stayed involved with their activities. Dawn was a charter member of the Rodell Homemakers, officer of the Senior Fellowship and ELCA Women’s group. Dawn and John were charter members and active dancers with the Fall Creek Square Dance Group.
Dawn was known as the “cake lady” for many years, baking and decorating countless wedding, anniversary, birthday, and other occasion cakes.
Dawn was a hard working farm wife and enjoyed traveling after retirement.
Dawn was baptized and confirmed Methodist in Ludington, but joined John at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek when they married.
Dawn will be dearly missed by her children; Dennis and Catherine, Donna and Scotty; 4 grandchildren, Mark and Lisa and their children, Harrison, Isabella and Jackson; Matthew and son Tristan; Dawn and Brian and their children, Evan and Dylan; Kurt and Carrie and their children, Sean and Ian. She is further survived by her brother Gale and Joyce Lowman; sisters-in-law, Nancy and Fritz Geske, Barbara Zempel and Elaine Lowman; several nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband John in 2000; her parents; great granddaughter Cora; and brothers, Lyle, Dale and Zane.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek, with Pastor Joanne Sorensen officiating. .
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Trinity Cemetery in Fall Creek.
