SueAnn Lucille (Volrath) Kunz passed away peacefully in her sleep at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, on Sunday, July 23, 2017. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
SueAnn (Susie) was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, April 16, 1942, daughter of Walter and Lucille (Martinson) Volrath. She attended school in Chippewa Falls and transferred to Augusta High School where she graduated in 1960.At age 16, Susie met Ronald George Kunz of Bridge Creek Township. The two were engaged February 27, 1960 andmarried at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Augusta, Wisconsin just weeks after her high school graduation on June 18, 1960. At her class reunions, she was proud to receive the award for being married longer than any of her classmates. The couple celebrated 52 wedding anniversaries together. At their home in Bridge Creek Township in rural Augusta, Ron and Sue raised four children: Rhonda, Renee, Scott and Reta. Her hobbies included sewing, needlecraft, and puzzles. She enjoyed activities with her family such as snowmobiling and trap shooting. SueAnn was a homemaker for a number of years, and in 1972 embarked on a successful 10-year career as a top-notch, award winning Avon representative. She also supported the family business, Kunz & Son Woodworking, as the office manager and bookkeeper for many years until Ronald’s death in December 2012, when she retired.
During her retirement, Susie enjoyed several wonderful adventures with family members. She took her first airplane ride and flew to Hawaii in 2013 with daughter Reta and her family; she also visited Cancun, Mexico in April of 2014 with her daughters, and took a week-long houseboat trip in 2015 with grandson Christopher Kunz and family.SueAnn had only recently moved to the Oakwood Hills Senior Living Community in Eau Claire, where she shared a lovely apartment with her beloved cat Spooks. She thoroughly enjoyed the many activities at Oakwood Hills including sharing meals with new friends in the dining room and playing bingo, Mexican train, and cribbage. In fact, Sue played a mean game of cribbage, taking on all comers. Even while living in Eau Claire, she made the drive to Augusta as often as possible to continue her weekly afternoon of cribbage with several friends at Trail’s Edge Saloon, where she—a passionate Packer Fan—often joined friends and neighbors to enjoy a game on the big-screen TV.
Sue’s generous and giving heart prompted her, in 2009, to make a gift to the National Disease Research Interchange upon her death to further research for HHT, the hereditary disease her family shares. In conjunction with the HHT Foundation, a researcher was paired with Sue, which will benefit others with the disease.
The family requests memorials to the HHT Foundation (PO Box 329 Monkton, MD, 21111) or to the building fund for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (417 West Lincoln Street, Augusta, WI 54722).
SueAnn was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ronald, father and step-mother Walter and Ann Volrath, mother and step-father Lucille and Albert Marion, brother Donovan Volrath, and sister Mary Drehmel.
