Carol A. Mayer, 67, of Augusta, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 28, 2018 in hospice care at Augusta Health and Rehabilitation.
Carol Ann Mayer, daughter of Robert and Ruth (Esser) Fitzmaurice was born January 18, 1951 in Black River Falls, WI. Carol was raised in Humbird, where she attended Humbird Elementary School. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Alma Center and attended Alma Center High School. During her senior year her family moved to Augusta, where she graduated from Augusta High School in 1969. Following high school Carol worked in Augusta at People State Bank and for the Dave Shong Insurance Agency. Carol was united in marriage to Edward Mayer in February of 1973 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Fairview, rural Fairchild, and to this union their 2 children were born. In 1978 the couple purchased the Spur Station in Augusta from Joe Wagner. This May would have been 40 years that Carol had operated the station.
Carol was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She not only ran a car-wash and filling station, but a place for friends to meet and share in many good times. When Carol was working everyone was greeted with an infectious smile, her quick wit and sense of humor. In addition to her desire to strike up conversations, she also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially the Poker games in gram’s basement with the family during the holidays. She absolutely loved reading and before finishing a book she always had a couple more waiting to be opened, and if a book was really good she often finished it in a day. When her children were young she enjoyed being out in the woods with them, hunting and having fun on the 3 wheelers. This fun with children had also carried over to her grandsons, as she treasured all the times spent with them.
Carol will be dearly missed by her daughter, Amy and Scott “Gibby” Gibson of Augusta; son, Scott and Chelsey Mayer of Augusta; 2 grandsons, Levi Mayer and Teddy Gibson; 3 brothers, Dennis and Darlene Fitzmaurice of Augusta, William and Linda Fitzmaurice of Eau Claire, Robert and Susan Fitzmaurice of Augusta; 2 sisters, JoAnn and Gerald LeMere, and Jean Dyson all of Augusta; nieces and nephews, Mitchell and LeAnn Balliett Marshall Balliett, Karl LeMere, Kevin and Angela LeMere, Angela Sandoval, Ashley Fitzmaurice, Adam (Mary) Fitzmaurice, Jacob Dyson, Liz (Joe) Langford, Roberta (Chuck) Joyner: and their families; uncle James Esser of Spooner: and aunt Mildred Fitzmaurice of Augusta.
Carol was preceded in death by her father Robert in 1982; and her mother Ruth in 2016.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Raymond’s of Penafort Catholic Church in Brackett, with visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Carol’s family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the friends that Carol acquired these past 40 years at the station. She truly appreciated the relationship she had with each and every one of you and it was your friendship that kept her going. A very special thank you for everyone’s visits, concern and prayers during her difficult and sudden illness, and also to all the wonderful doctors and caregivers she had taking care of her.
Through all of this Carol’s loyal and dedicated employees went over and beyond what was expected of them to keep the station operating as smoothly as possible. Judy, Patti, Keegan, Kaymie and Lori, we were so blessed to have you there. No words will ever adequately express our gratitude to all of you.
