Dean Edward Johnston, 86, of rural Augusta, passed away Sunday afternoon August 4, 2024, at Mayo Healthcare Center, Eau Claire.
Dean was born April 16, 1938, son of Carl and Leona (Karow) Johnston. He was a life long member of Grace Lutheran Church where he was baptized on June 12, 1938, and confirmed on Feb. 24, 1952. Dean attended Rodell Country School and graduated from Augusta High School in 1956. Following his graduation he moved to Kenosha where he was employed by American Motors. While in Kenosha he met Rosalie Picazo and it was here that the two were united in marriage on September 12, 1959.
In 1965 after working at American Motors for 7 years, he was able to purchase a farm near Fremont. When the family farm became available he moved with his family back to Augusta and since 1970 has farmed in Bridge Creek Township. When he first returned he had also worked on the township road crew for a short time.
Farming was not only his livelihood but also his passion. He was a proud member of the Holstein Association and until selling the cattle in 2016 he had always raised registered Holsteins. Dean continued as a crop farmer, unfortunately after suffering a heart attack in February of this year, his last time on the tractor was April 30th at the start of this year’s planting.
Throughout his life Dean was always a very organized and well documented farmer. Checking his crops daily was part of his routine and still looked forward to his Sunday drives throughout the area with Rosalie seeing how other area farmers where fairing.
In later years he was extremely interested in reading and collecting old Holstein sale catalogs.
Dean will be dearly missed by Rosalie, his loving wife of nearly 65 years; 2 sons, Mark Johnston of Augusta, Gary and Jennifer Johnston of Chippewa Falls; daughter Joan Johnston of Augusta; grandson Kenneth Johnston of Augusta; sister, Jeanette (Larry) McSorley of Eau Claire; and brother Rev. Dale (Christine) Johnston of New Jersey.
Dean was preceded in death by his father Carl in 1985; mother Leona in 2001; and brother Larry in 1956.
A private memorial service for family will be held at the Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Wessel officiating.
A Celebration of Life will be at a later date.
