Alice Delores Laufenberg, 92, of Osseo, surrounded by Love, completed her last earthly physical illness race on June 3, 2024, one day shy of celebrating her 73rd wedding anniversary. She is now back to speed walking and watching over her family from Heaven.
Alice was born at home in Huron, WI on 1-24-1932 to Stephen and Lillian (Vajgrt) Quesnell. Alice worked hard on the home farm, attended school in Cornell until 8th grade, then moved with her parents to Stanley where she graduated and was a proficient cornet musician. As an only child, Alice wanted a big family and career that involved being around children. Her quest to achieve that dream began as she pursued Elementary Education at UWRF. There, she met the love of her life, Harold Laufenberg and they were married June 4, 1951. After Harry’s graduation, they moved to Ladysmith for his teaching job in Tony WI. In 1959, they moved to Osseo with their family of 4 children, with #5 arriving in the next year.
Alice’s lifetime with Harry was dedicated to children, raising and nurturing their 5 children, and participating in their activities. While staying home with her own children, she also provided
in-home daycare for a young boy who was special to her, Kirk Vetterkind, from infancy until he entered kindergarten. In 1969 she began working at Osseo Schools as a Jr High Librarian, lunchroom “supervisor”, publisher of the monthly Outlook newsletter and other duties.
She and Harry retired in 1989 from the Osseo-Fairchild School District.
They watched their family grow with grandchildren and enjoyed many years golfing, fishing, finding thrift sale bargains, and playing the slots. Love of children and education continued in retirement. They volunteered for 15 years in their granddaughter Samantha’s 4K Osseo classroom, and became Grandma and Grandpa to hundreds. They loved following and supporting their grandkids’ and greats’ sports, music and school activities. Hospitality to others was very important to Alice. Even though her family was large, there was always room for more at the Laufenberg table. We all hold many memories of Mom and Dad hosting family Christmas Eve and Father’s Day cookouts.
Alice LOVED to walk. For many years, she could be seen speed walking the streets of Osseo at the break of dawn. Walking fast was one of her joys and helped her let go of anything that might be bothering her. She was also a bionic grandma, and her multiple joint replacements never stopped her from continuing her walks. One great sadness in her later life was that her physical ailments finally caught up with her, and walking became very difficult.
Alice carried a strong faith relationship with her Lord, and always believed that He watched over her, even in her many challenging times. Alice was a strong, feisty, God loving wife, mother, and grandmother who leaves a beautiful legacy to her entire family.
