Shirley Volbrecht, 91, life long resident of the Fall Creek area passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning, September 7, 2024, at Lake Hallie Memory Care in rural Chippewa Falls.
Shirley Ann was the oldest of three daughters born to Arthur and Irene (Steinke) Kersten. She was born on March 8, 1933, and raised on a farm in Lincoln Township.
She attended country school and graduated in 1951 from Fall Creek High School. While dancing the Circle 2 Step at Fournier’s Dance Hall in Eau Claire, Shirley met Lawrence Walter Volbrecht and the two later married on May 25, 1952.
The couple farmed in Lincoln Township and in addition to raising her three sons, she did some field work but was mostly responsible for the milking. She always had a bountiful garden and in the fall spent hours canning the harvest to feed her family. After her sons were raised she entered the work force and for 10 years was employed on the line of Bush Brothers Canning Company where her job was adding the bacon to their baked beans. Through this endeavor she met many new faces and many of her fellow workers remained close friends throughout the years.
Shirley’s faith was always an important part of her life. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. James Lutheran Church in Fall Creek . After her marring to Lawrence she became a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bears Grass, rural Augusta. In 1991 when the couple retired from farming they moved into the Village of Fall Creek and at this time Shirley wanted to attend her home church and renewed her membership at St. James Lutheran. Over the years she was active with both St. Peter’s Dorcas Society and with St. James WELCA, served on the altar guild and volunteered at Bethesda Thrift Shop in Eau Claire.
After retiring Shirley spent much of her life helping others. She looked forward to her many visits to the Fall Creek Nursing Home where she knew how important taking the time to stop and visit the residents met to them. She helped with the BINGO games, took the time to gather the prizes and helped in other activities wherever she could. Because she could drive she transported many of her family and friends to various appointment, shopping or just out to eat. She also loved spending time with her sisters and sisters-in-law and together they shared many enjoyable hours.
Shirley was not only a wonderful wife and mother, but a very special grandmother and great grandmother. She attended all the events her children and grandchildren were in and kept every news article, program and photo that not only had to do with her own immediate family but her extended family and friends as well.
When her health failed and she sold her home she moved for a time with her son Randy and his wife, she then spent a few years with her sister Donna and niece Cindy Anibas in Osseo before moving to Lake Hallie Memory Care. The family is deeply grateful to Donna, Cindy and Brenda for allowing Shirley the time to spend with their family and for taking such wonderful care of her. They also want to thank the staff and residents at Lake Hallie Memory Care for providing a warm family atmosphere for her these past 2 years.
Shirley will be remembered as a very warm and loving soul, with never a mean thought or action towards anyone. She will be deeply missed and was an excellent role model to her sons, Gary (Carlene) Volbrecht and Randy (Toni) Volbrecht all of rural Fall Creek, Mark (Darla) Volbrecht of Eau Claire; 10 grandchildren, Gregory (Ka) Volbrecht, Timothy (Cassandra) Volbrecht, Steven Volbrecht (Brittany Rawlings), Stacia Volbrecht (Pauly Cruickshank), Aaron (Abby) Volbrecht, Rachel Volbrecht, Carrisa (Nick) Sortedahl, Kayla (Zach) Ahles, Brianna (Andrew) Enoksen, Kersten Volbrecht; 14 great grandchildren, Sophia, Owen, Eden, Josie, Emily, Malachi, Easton, Otto, Daniel, Clara, William, Ezra, Laurel and Henry; sisters, Donna Anibas of Osseo, Sharon (Orville) Green of Cadott; brother-in-law, Donald (Shirley) Volbrecht of Eagan, MN; several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence who passed away on March 29, 1995; father Arthur in 1976; mother Irene in 2007; in-laws, Ed Anibas; Dorothy (Edward) Jungerberg, Doris Volbrecht, Harold (Leona) Volbrecht; nieces, Judy Volbrecht and Susie Volbrecht.
Friends may call from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024, at St. James Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek, where funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday with Pastor Justin Arnold officiating.
