Fern R. Wood, 91, of Eau Claire, passed away at her home early Sunday morning, October 14, 2012. Fern Rowena Wood, daughter of Peter and Laura (Dodsworth) Wood, was born Feb. 12, 1921 in Garfield Township, Jackson County. As a child she attended Carlson Country School and graduated from Fairchild High School in 1939. Fern attained her teaching degree at Eau Claire State Teachers College and went on to earn her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. Fern’s teaching career kept her in the Eau Claire area, she retired from teaching while at Sherman Creek Elementary School in Eau Claire, where she taught 1st. grade.
Fern had been a member of Lake Street Methodist Church in Eau Claire, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and had also helped over the years with the monthly church newsletter. For many years she had also been an active member of the NU chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, which is an international honorary sorority of women educators.
When Fern’s health failed her, she was able to continue to live in her home on Bradley Avenue in Eau Claire, with the live-in help of her nephew and his wife, Peter and Laurie Hagen.
She is survived by her niece, Amy and William Adams of Inverness, Florida; great nephews, Peter Hagen, Ernest, Jerome, Gregory and Nicholas Hamman, Jason Adams and great nieces, Anna Hill, Victoria Pratt and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Alice Hagen on Nov. 7, 2003, and nieces, Harriet Dubon in 2005 and Helen Walker in 2012.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, with Pastor Scott Danielson officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
